How are tires produced

There are many components that go into the Goodyear tire production process, and they all play an important role in ensuring that your vehicle achieves superior performance and keeps you safe


Tire parts


bead


The tread is made of high-strength steel wire covered with rubber, keeping the tire tight to the rim of the synthetic wheel.


Belt ply


The wire strap wraps around the tire to provide strength and stability and is made of a wire weave consisting of steel wire covered with rubber. Aramid cord is sometimes added to add extra strength, puncture resistance and durability.


Cord ply


The cord layer is the skeleton of a tire made of fiber, usually made of woven fiber threads covered with rubber. This will make your tires flexible. The cord layer, also known as the body cord layer, is placed directly on the inner lining of the tire and provides the strength of the tire.


sidewall


This is the area that extends from the bead to the thicker rubber parts of the tread and provides the lateral stability of the tire. Here you will find all the tire manufacturing information.


Grooves and grooves


Tread pattern blocks are separated by deep grooves, which allow your tires to drain water, snow and mud. Knife grooves are smaller grooves carved into tread pattern blocks that provide extra grip, which is especially important on tires made for snow and ice road conditions.


Tire shoulder


The slightly angled edge of the tread on your tire that meets the side of the tread. Its pattern and structure play an important role in your steering control.

This is the part of your tire where the rubber meets the road. The tread provides both cushioning and grip, and its pattern and formulation determine most of the important performance characteristics of your tire.


mixing

Up to 30 ingredients are mixed into the rubber of your tires, and the ratio of ingredients depends on the performance objectives of the tires. It is made up of various types of rubber, filler and other raw materials, which are mixed together in a giant mixer called a Banbury mixer to produce a black, sticky compound that will be used for calendering.


rolling

After the mixed rubber cools, it is sent to a special mixer, where it is cut into strips that will form the basic structure of the tire. At this stage, other parts of the tire are also prepared, some of which are covered with another type of rubber.


molding

Assemble the tire itself from the inside out. Fabric pieces, wire belting, bead, cord layer, tread and other parts are placed in a tire forming machine to ensure that each part is in its exact position. The result, which looks somewhat like the final product, is called a fetus.


vulcanization

The birth tire is placed into a heated mold for pressure curing to vulcanize, and all the tire's parts are pressed together and given its final shape, including its tread pattern and manufacturer's sidemark.
